LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the meaning of length.
  2. Identify different tools used for measuring length.
  3. Recognize the metric units of measuring length (mm, cm).
  4. Measure and record the length, breadth or height of objects.
  5. Carry out the conversion of units concerning centimetre, millimetre, metre, kilometre, etc.

MATERIALS: Tape measure, meter rule, charts on the standard unit of length, and pupils as learning resources.

NOTE

Length is the measurement of how long or short an object is.

There are two methods for measuring length;

  1. The olden methods which involve hand span, stride, arm length, etc.
  2. The standard methods such as tape measure,  metre rule, etc.

Metric unit of length

10 millimetres = 1 decimetre

10 decimetres = 1 centimetre

10 centimetres = 1 metre

1000 metres = 1 kilometre

EVALUATION:

  1. What is length?
  2. Explain two olden methods and two standard methods of measuring length
  3. Recite the metric unit of length
