Parts Of Plants And Their Uses

Plants have different parts, each with specific functions that help them grow and survive. The main parts of a plant are roots, stems, and leaves.

Functions of Roots:

1. Absorb water and nutrients from the soil.
2. Anchor the plant firmly in the ground.
3. Store food and nutrients.
4. Help in vegetative reproduction in some plants.
5. Transport water and nutrients to the stem.

Functions of Stems:

1. Support the plant and hold it upright.
2. Transport water and nutrients from roots to leaves.
3. Store food and nutrients.
4. Produce new living tissue.
5. In some plants, stems help in reproduction (e.g., runners in strawberries).

Functions of Leaves:

1. Carry out photosynthesis to make food for the plant.
2. Help in gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide).
3. Transpire water to cool the plant and transport nutrients.
4. Store food in some plants (e.g., spinach).
5. Protect the plant from herbivores (e.g., thorns).

Lesson Evaluation:

To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:

1. Name the three main parts of a plant.
2. Explain two functions of roots.
3. Describe the role of stems in a plant’s life.
4. List two functions of leaves.
5. Draw and label a simple plant diagram showing roots, stems, and leaves.
