Topic: Weight II
Content: Conversion, addition, subtraction and multiplication of weight.
Primary Objectives:
- Students will be able to convert units of weight from one unit to another (e.g. grams to kilograms, pounds to ounces).
- Students will be able to perform addition, subtraction, and multiplication of weight in different units.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Worksheets with weight problems
- Measuring scales
- Objects of different weights (e.g. fruits, books)
Introduction – Set Induction (5 minutes):
The teacher begins the lesson by asking the students what weight means from the previous lesson. Ask if they remember the units of weight, such as grams, kilograms, pounds, or ounces. Introduce the concept of converting units of weight and explain that it is important to know how to convert units in order to solve problems involving weight.
CONTENT (40 minutes):
- Conversion of Units of Weight (15 minutes)
- Write down the different units of weight on the whiteboard.
- Explain that each unit is used for measuring weight in different circumstances
- Provide examples of when each unit might be used and their conversion value. (e.g. grams for measuring small amounts, Kilograms for measuring heavy amounts).
1000 miligram = 1 gram
1000 gram = 1 kilogram
- Demonstrate how to convert units of weight using examples on the board, and then have the students practice converting units with problems on their worksheets.
- Addition, Subtraction, and Multiplication of Weight (25 minutes)
- Write addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems involving weight on the board (e.g. “If Sarah weighs 40 kilograms and Tom weighs 25 kilograms, what is the total weight of both children?”).
- Have the students solve the problems individually, then in pairs, and finally as a group.
- Encourage the students to use the knowledge they gained from the conversion activity to solve the problems involving different units of weight.
Conclusion (5 minutes):
Review the key concepts learned in the lesson, such as the units of weight, conversion of units, and performing addition, subtraction, and multiplication of weight. Ask the students if they have any questions or concerns, and provide additional examples if needed. Assign homework involving similar problems to reinforce the concepts taught in class.
Assessment:
The teacher can assess the students’ understanding of the topic by observing their participation in class activities, evaluating their worksheets and homework, and conducting quizzes or tests to measure their knowledge of the topic.
