Weight is the measure of how heavy something is. It is often measured in milligrams (mg), grams (g), or kilograms (kg), depending on the size or mass of the object.

Conversion of Units of Weight

To solve problems involving weight, we often need to change from one unit to another. Here are the basic conversion rules we will use:

  • Milligrams to Grams: To convert milligrams to grams, we divide by 1000 because there are 1000 milligrams in 1 gram. $$\text{grams (g)} = \frac{\text{milligrams (mg)}}{1000}$$
  • Grams to Milligrams: To convert grams to milligrams, we multiply by 1000. $$\text{milligrams (mg)} = \text{grams (g)} \times 1000$$
  • Grams to Kilograms: To convert grams to kilograms, we divide by 1000 because there are 1000 grams in 1 kilogram. $$\text{kilograms (kg)} = \frac{\text{grams (g)}}{1000}$$
  • Kilograms to Grams: To convert kilograms to grams, we multiply by 1000. $$\text{grams (g)} = \text{kilograms (kg)} \times 1000$$
  • Milligrams are used for very light things (like medicine doses).
  • Grams are used for moderately light things (like fruits).
  • Kilograms are used for heavier things (like a sack of rice).

Conversion Facts:

  • 1,000 grams (g) = 1 kilogram (kg)

Example:
To convert 5,000 mg to grams:
= 5,000 ÷ 1,000 = 5 g

To convert 3,000 g to kilograms:

Addition and Subtraction of Weight

When adding or subtracting weights, the units must be the same.

Example:
A bag of rice weighs 35 kg, and another bag weighs 25 kg. What is the total weight? = 35 kg + 25 kg = 60 kg

If a boy weighs 50 kg and he loses 5 kg:
= 50 kg – 5 kg = 45 kg

Multiplication of Weight by 1- or 2-Digit Numbers

Weight can also be multiplied to find totals when we have multiple objects of the same weight.

Example:
If one mango weighs 150 g, how much do 4 mangoes weigh?
= 150 g × 4 = 600 g

If a carton of milk weighs 2 kg, how much do 12 cartons weigh?
= 2 kg × 12 = 24 kg
