Functions of Different Food Nutrients in the Body
To maintain good health, our body needs various nutrients that is gotten from foodstuffs we eat. Each of these nutrients has a special function in our body and they include the following:
- Carbohydrates: Provides energy for daily activities.
- Examples of Carbohydrates: Bread, rice, pasta, potatoes.
- Proteins: Helps in the growth and repair of body tissues.
- Examples of Proteins: Meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts.
- Fats: Stores energy and help in absorbing vitamins.
- Examples of Fats: Butter, oils, nuts, avocados.
- Vitamins: Supports various body functions, such as vision, skin health, and the immune system.
- Examples of Vitamins: Fruits, vegetables, dairy products.
- Minerals: Strengthen bones and teeth, and help in muscle function and the nervous system.
- Examples of Minerals: Meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, nuts.
Lesson Evaluation:
To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:
- Define foodstuff.
- List three types of food nutrients and their functions.
- Explain why proteins are important for the body.
- Identify two local food items and the nutrients they provide.
- Discuss in pairs the importance of eating a balanced diet.
