Chemical Composition of Water
Water is a compound consisting of hydrogen and oxygen chemically bonded together. Like other compounds, the smallest particles of water are called molecules. Each molecule of water contains two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.[1]
Chemical Formula of Water
The chemical formula of water is H2O. The “H” stands for hydrogen and “O” for oxygen. The ratio of hydrogen to oxygen in water is 2:1, It shows us that each molecule of water consists of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. The number ‘2’ next to hydrogen in H2O tells us there are two hydrogen atoms for every one oxygen atom.
Lesson Evaluation
To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:
- What is the chemical formula of water?
- Name the two elements that make up water.
- Explain why the chemical formula of water is H2O.
