Area is defined as the amount of surface covered by a shape or object. It tells us how much space a shape covers and is measured in square units, such as square centimeters (cm²), square meters (m²), and square kilometers (km²).

Units of Measurement of Area

  • Square Centimeters (cm²): Used for small surfaces.
  • Square Meters (m²): Ideal for larger surfaces, like rooms.
  • Square Kilometers (km²): Used for very large areas, like cities.

Calculating Area of Rectangles

The area of a rectangle is found by multiplying its length by its breadth (Area = Length × Breadth).

  • Example: For a rectangle with a length of 5cm and a breadth of 4cm, Area = 5cm × 4cm = 20cm².

Calculating Area of Squares

The area of a square can be found by multiplying the length of one side by itself (Area = Side × Side). Note that a we don’t use Breadth because a the sides of a square are all equal.

  • Example: For a square with sides of length 7cm, Area = 7cm × 7cm = 49cm².

Quantitative Aptitude on Area

Quantitative aptitude problems involve applying area concepts to solve more complex and practical problems. This requires understanding and applying the formula in various situations.

  • Example: If a square garden has a side length of 10m, find the area. Then, if a path of 1m width runs inside the garden along its boundary, find the area covered by the path.
