Lesson Content

The Earth and The Movement

The Earth is one of the planets in our solar system, which also includes Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is uniquely positioned to support life.

Rotation: The Earth spins on its axis, an imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole. This spinning motion is called rotation, and it takes approximately 24 hours to complete one rotation. This rotation is what causes day and night. When your part of the Earth faces the Sun, it is day, and when it faces away, it is night.

Revolution: Besides rotating, the Earth also revolves around the Sun. This revolution takes about 365.25 days to complete one full orbit. This movement is responsible for the changing seasons as different parts of the Earth get varying amounts of sunlight throughout the year.

Differences between Rotation and Revolution:

While both movements involve the Earth, rotation refers to the Earth spinning on its axis, causing day and night, whereas revolution refers to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, which leads to the changing seasons.
