INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES
Learning Area: Steps in Making Temporary Stitches
To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:
Content Development | Time | Teaching Method | Teaching Strategy | Teacher’s Activity | Pupil’s Activity | Learning Point |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Step 1: Introduction | 5 mins | Interactive Discussion | Set Induction | The teacher asks pupils to recall the uses of different types of stitches from the previous lesson. | Pupils respond by naming types of stitches and their uses. | Pupils refresh prior knowledge on stitches. |
Step 2: Demonstration | 8 mins | Demonstration | Visual Learning | The teacher shows a fabric and demonstrates how to start a temporary stitch (tacking stitch) step by step. | Pupils watch the demonstration closely. | Pupils visually grasp the technique for making temporary stitches. |
Step 3: Practice | 10 mins | Guided Practice | Hands-on Activity | The teacher gives needles and fabric to pupils and guides them in practicing the first few stitches. | Pupils follow the teacher’s instructions to make temporary stitches on fabric. | Pupils practice making temporary stitches with guidance. |
Step 4: Independent Practice | 8 mins | Individual Activity | Peer Collaboration | Pupils are asked to work in pairs to practice the stitch on their own. | Pupils practice independently and assist their peers where needed. | Pupils develop the skill of making temporary stitches on their own. |
Step 5: Note Taking | 5 mins | Chalk and Talk | Visual Learning | The teacher writes the key steps on the board and asks pupils to copy them into their notebooks. | Pupils copy the steps for making temporary stitches. | Pupils document key points for future reference. |
Step 6: Evaluation | 3 mins | Questioning | Oral Assessment | The teacher asks questions to test the understanding of the steps involved in making temporary stitches. | Pupils answer the teacher’s questions orally. | Teacher evaluates pupil understanding. |
Step 7: Conclusion | 1 min | Summary | Reinforcement | The teacher summarizes the lesson by highlighting the importance of mastering temporary stitches in sewing tasks. | Pupils listen to the teacher’s summary and ask any final questions. | Pupils understand the importance of the lesson in real-life situations. |
Lesson Content
Steps in Making Temporary Stitches
Temporary stitches are used to hold fabric in place before applying permanent stitches. These are essential in preventing fabric from shifting while sewing.
- Prepare your needle and thread: Thread your needle with a length of thread suitable for your fabric. Knot the end of the thread.
- Insert the needle: Begin by pushing the needle through the fabric from the underside to the top.
- Create the first stitch: Pull the thread through and reinsert the needle a small distance away to create a short, straight stitch.
- Continue stitching: Repeat this process, maintaining equal distances between each stitch. This is called “tacking.”
- Secure the thread: Once you’ve finished stitching, knot the thread at the back of the fabric to secure it.
Lesson Evaluation:
To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:
- List the steps involved in making temporary stitches.
- Explain why temporary stitches are important in sewing.
- Demonstrate how to make a simple tacking stitch.
- Work in pairs to complete a row of temporary stitches on fabric.
