Definition and Types of Marriage

Marriage is the union between two people, recognized by law or tradition, who agree to live together as husband and wife.

Types of Marriage

There are two (2) main types of marriage and they are:

  1. Inter-ethnic Marriage: A marriage between people from different ethnic groups.
  2. Intra-ethnic Marriage: A marriage between people from the same ethnic group.

Elements of Marriage Traditions

The following are elements involved in marriage:

  1. Exchange of Vows: The couple promises to love and support each other.
  2. Dowry or Bride Price: Payment or gift given by the groom’s family to the bride’s family.
  3. Wedding Ceremony: A formal celebration marking the union of the couple.
  4. Religious or Legal Documentation: Official recognition of the marriage through religious or legal papers.
  5. Family Blessings: Approval and support from both families for the marriage.

Issues Related to Inter-ethnic Marriage:

While marriage is a good thing, sometimes, problems may arise expecially in Inter-ethnic marriages. These problems includes:

  1. Cultural Differences: Couples may face challenges due to varying customs and traditions.
  2. Language Barriers: Difficulty communicating due to different native languages.
  3. Family Acceptance: Some families may struggle to accept a spouse from a different ethnic background.
